Why Emergency Nurses Should Consider Expert Witness Work
Emergency nurses are at the front line of healthcare delivery – trusted with split-second decisions, critical thinking, and complex care, but few realise how valuable these same skills are within the medico-legal field.
At Apex Experts, we're looking for experienced Emergency Department Nurses to join our nationally recognised panel of outstanding expert witnesses.
Our clients range from solicitors and regulators to His Majesty’s Coroners, and they need sharp, credible, and clinical minds to advise on nursing standards and care pathways. From breach of duty opinions to causation analysis, your insights help shape outcomes in complex legal disputes – and uphold accountability within the system.
What You’ll Do
As an Emergency Department Nurse Expert Witness with Apex Experts, you’ll provide:
Independent Written Reports: Based on clinical notes and supporting documentation, you'll assess whether the care delivered met the required standards.
Expert Opinions on Breach and Causation: Your assessment helps determine if substandard care contributed to patient harm.
Court-Ready Testimony: On rare occasions, you may be asked to give oral evidence in legal proceedings (though this is infrequent).
Support for Inquests and Regulatory Hearings: Offering clarity on nursing conduct in high-stakes scenarios.
You’ll operate as an independent consultant, meaning you retain full control over your availability and case load, with Apex managing the rest.

Why Join Apex Experts?
The medico-legal world is complex. Many independent nurse experts struggle with administration, marketing, and delayed payments.
At Apex, we solve that by offering:
Admin Support: We liaise with clients, manage deadlines, handle billing, and follow up on unpaid invoices.
Prompt and Reliable Payment: You’re paid within 30 days of invoice submission – even if the client hasn’t paid us yet.
Training & Mentorship: We offer free training and ongoing guidance from experienced clinicians and our admin team.
You do the clinical thinking, we do everything else.
Who We’re Looking For: Nurse Experts in Emergency Care
We're particularly interested in nurses with:
Band 7 or higher NHS experience in Emergency/Acute settings
Active NMC registration
At least 10 years’ post-registration experience (though we consider exceptional cases)
A clear, analytical approach to documentation and clinical reasoning
A desire to contribute to justice, fairness, and accountability

Whether you're a Sister, Charge Nurse, ANP or ENP, your emergency care insights are uniquely valuable in court proceedings. This role suits nurses who enjoy writing, critical reflection, and applying their knowledge in new and meaningful ways.
A Day in the Life of an Emergency Department Nurse Expert Witness
Your day might look like:
Reviewing a complex A&E admission involving alleged delayed triage.
Cross-referencing medical records with NICE and RCEM standards.
Drafting an expert report, identifying where care deviated (or didn’t) from accepted standards.
Attending a client call or preparing for a joint expert meeting.
Submitting your invoice and letting us take care of the admin side of things.
Every case is different. Some last weeks; others span several years. But we ensure that you are fully supported every step of the way.
The Medico-Legal Sector Needs You
Legal professionals depend on robust, well-articulated opinions to support or defend claims of clinical negligence. That’s where you come in. Demand for nurse expert witnesses has grown sharply in the last five years, driven by increased clinical negligence litigation in the NHS, greater scrutiny in coroner’s inquests and rising awareness of nursing accountability in complex patient journeys.
As a result, your skills are in demand.
Join a high-performing, forward-thinking team, and let Apex Experts help you deliver justice with clinical credibility.
Your Next Step? Apply to Join our Panel of Nursing Expert Witnesses!
Submit your CV for review via email.
Have a short, informal call with our Director.
If successful, sign a Services Agreement and complete a declaration form.

Your Expertise Matters
Working as an Emergency Department Nurse Expert Witness is more than just a career opportunity - it’s a chance to elevate the standard of nursing care, ensure professional accountability, and support fair outcomes for patients and clinicians alike.
Apex Experts is proud to lead the way in medico-legal nursing consultancy and invite you to be a part of it.
