Kay Crossland is an experienced Emergency and Critical Care Nurse whose specialist expertise in cruise ship medicine makes her exceptionally well placed to advise on complex maritime healthcare cases. Kay has progressed from Nursing Officer to Senior Nursing Officer, where she has led onboard medical services, delivering autonomous emergency, urgent and primary care to thousands of passengers and crew in remote maritime environments.

 

Working at sea demands exceptional clinical judgement, adaptability and leadership in often isolated and resource-limited environments. During her career, Kay has managed a wide range of medical emergencies at sea, delivering emergency, primary and critical care to both passengers and crew. She has extensive experience stabilising critically ill patients, coordinating complex medical evacuations including helicopter evacuations and international transfers, and managing infectious disease outbreaks alongside wider public health responsibilities. In addition, she has overseen shipboard radiography, laboratory diagnostics and pharmacy services, while maintaining responsibility for clinical governance, complaints management and regulatory compliance. As Senior Nursing Officer, she has also led multidisciplinary medical teams, ensuring the safe and effective delivery of 24-hour healthcare services onboard cruise vessels.

 

Alongside her maritime practice, Kay is a Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner, Independent Nurse Prescriber and Advanced Life Support Instructor, with previous senior NHS experience in Emergency Medicine, Critical Care Outreach, Intensive Care and Clinical Site Management.

 

Her combination of remote medicine, cruise ship healthcare, emergency nursing and critical care provides a highly specialised perspective for medico-legal cases involving maritime healthcare, onboard emergency treatment, medical evacuations, infectious disease management and cruise line clinical standards.
