Join Apex Experts as an Extravasation Nurse Expert Witness: Lead the Legal Conversation on IV Injury Care

Updated: 2 days ago

Intravenous therapy-related injuries such as extravasation are among the most serious and scrutinised clinical incidents in cancer and acute care. These cases frequently give rise to litigation, regulatory investigation, or inquest proceedings, where independent, clinically grounded expert opinion is essential. Apex Experts is now welcoming applications from highly experienced senior nurses to join our expert witness panel and specialise in this growing area of medico-legal practice.

If you are a Band 7 nurse, Advanced Clinical Practitioner, or highly experienced senior in cancer or IV therapy care, this is your opportunity to contribute to patient safety and justice — while working flexibly and independently, with the full support of a trusted legal-medical team behind you.

Why Extravasation Expertise Is In Demand

When extravasation injuries occur — whether due to vesicant chemotherapy infiltration, misplacement of a vascular access device, or delayed escalation of a patient’s deteriorating condition — the clinical questions that follow are complex and critical. Legal teams and the Courts rely on independent nurse experts to clarify whether the standard of care was met, if protocols were followed, and what, if anything, could or should have been done differently.

As an Extravasation Nurse Expert Witness, your analysis can shape the outcomes of claims, guide service improvement, and ensure lessons are learned.

Who Should Apply?

Apex Experts is looking for nurses with a deep understanding of IV therapy and extravasation risk, developed over at least a decade of senior practice. Applicants should be confident assessing evidence from complex patient records, translating clinical guidelines into legal contexts, and writing reports that meet the standards of Part 35 of the Civil Procedure Rules.

If you’ve advanced your practice through postgraduate education — whether in clinical leadership, prescribing, or specialist nursing — your expertise is especially suited to this work.

Your real-world understanding of oncology and haematology care, coupled with a commitment to accuracy and professional independence, is exactly what we value most in our panel.

What the Role Involves

Expert witness work is varied and intellectually engaging. You may be instructed on cases involving peripheral extravasation injuries, central line complications, delays in recognising infiltration, or system-level failures in line monitoring and escalation. You’ll provide clear, impartial reports that examine the decisions taken, assess adherence to professional standards, and identify any departures from acceptable practice.

In most cases, your work will involve reviewing case documents remotely, drafting your report using Apex’s secure templates, and liaising with our expert support team. Occasionally, you may be asked to take part in remote or in-person case conferences, or — very rarely — attend court or inquest proceedings.

Why Join Apex Experts?

We understand what expert nurses need and handle everything from client enquiries to billing, documentation to diary coordination. You simply focus on your clinical opinion — and we ensure you're supported, paid promptly, and never left to navigate the legal landscape alone.

Training is provided, as is ongoing mentorship, and you’ll work in collaboration with a professional, respected community of expert nurses across the UK.

You’ll be compensated for your time on each case, and we guarantee payment within 30 days — regardless of how long the legal process may take to conclude.

What’s more, your work as an expert witness can influence how care is delivered nationally. By identifying systemic issues, reinforcing good practice, and upholding professional standards, you contribute to the advancement of nursing as a whole.
