Nurses working in paediatrics understand more than most the critical impact of every decision made in a child’s care. Whether in neonatal intensive care, emergency departments, community paediatrics, or safeguarding, senior nurses constantly balance clinical risk, safety, and the emotional needs of families.
But when care delivery is questioned, either by families, regulators, or the courts, who provides an objective, expert voice to guide those discussions?
In the UK medico-legal system, experienced paediatric nurses are increasingly relied upon to act as independent experts in clinical negligence, regulatory investigations, and coronial matters. At Apex Experts, we’re looking for senior clinicians to explore paediatric nurse expert witness careers UK and contribute their expertise in a new, powerful way.
This role offers the flexibility to remain in clinical practice while shaping justice and improving the standards of paediatric care nationally.
What Does a Paediatric Nurse Expert Witness Do?
As a nurse expert witness, your role is to independently assess the quality of nursing care provided in specific cases, particularly where harm or poor outcomes are alleged. You’ll analyse clinical documentation, timelines, safeguarding logs, care plans, and policies to determine whether the care delivered was in line with accepted professional standards at the time.

You will then be expected to articulate your findings in a clear, structured written report. These reports support the court in applying the Bolam and Bolitho legal tests, helping them determine whether there has been a breach of duty, and if that breach contributed to harm.
It is not about blaming or defending anyone. It is about presenting the facts in a way that’s clinically credible, unbiased, and aligned with the standard expected of a competent paediatric nurse. That objectivity is what gives your voice weight and credibility in highly sensitive matters.
Why This Work Matters
Cases involving children are among the most complex and emotionally charged in clinical litigation. Yet they are also the cases where clarity, precision, and professional interpretation are needed most. Courts, families, and legal professionals often do not have the medical knowledge needed to make sense of clinical documentation or assess what should reasonably have occurred.

As an expert witness, you fill that gap. You guide decision-makers by providing clinical insight grounded in practical reality. Your opinion can be the difference between misjudgement and a fair outcome.
You may support the legal process, but your influence goes far beyond the courtroom. By bringing transparency to what happened and why, your reports can influence clinical governance reviews, inform future service improvements, and provide closure for families.

Complete Control, Total Flexibility
One of the key reasons experienced nurses join our panel is the level of autonomy it provides. You remain fully self-employed and have complete control over your workload. There are no quotas, no obligations to take on every case, and no pressure to adjust your clinical commitments unless you choose to.
Most of our nurse experts continue to work in NHS or private sector roles, choosing to take on one or two cases at a time. Others move into portfolio careers, combining expert witness work with teaching, inspection, or governance roles. Whichever path you take, we work around your goals—not the other way around.
And because our platform is fully cloud-based and encrypted, you can complete your work securely from home. Attendance at court or conference is rare, but if it does arise, we’ll guide you through that process too.
What You’ll Need to Get Started

To join our expert witness panel, you don’t need legal qualifications—your clinical expertise is your most valuable asset. However, we do look for nurses who are confident in reviewing documentation, writing professionally, and staying objective. You’ll need:

Band 7 level or higher in your current or most recent role
